Major snowstorms can bring outages, travel issues, cancellations, and delays. If the forecast is calling for snow and dangerously cold temps, your future self would like a quick word.

By getting ahead of the weather, you can set yourself up to enjoy a cozy snow day (or two) rather than venturing into the elements to panic buy ramen and cocoa for your dorm room.

To help you get started, we’ve prepared a 10-minute snowpocalypse checklist to prepare you for a major snow event.

10-minute snowpocalypse checklist

  1. Charge everything: Phone, laptop, earbuds, and whatever keeps you functional. Don’t forget to charge your backup power packs and find your extension cord if your outlet situation is tragic.

  2. Download the LiveSafe App: Login with your UB credentials and remember to turn on notifications so you can receive important updates from us!

  3. Stay connected to official accounts: Keep an eye on UB’s official channels and website for any schedule or campus updates.

  4. Text your “check-in” people: Roommates, friends, family. Share your plan to weather the storm and confirm that you’re good with the folks thinking about you.

  5. Stock a few basics: Water, easy-to-eat food options, and any meds you may need. While the dining hall is made available during inclement weather, you may have a difficult time trekking through the storm and prefer to stay put for some dorm room dining.

  6. Dress for success: Warm layers, hats, gloves, boots (and an extra UB hoodie or two)

Commuters: Plan for travel and park in appropriate lots so UB’s Facilities team can clear snow effectively and safely.

Pro tip: Prepare like the snow is trying to inconvenience you personally. Because it is.

Food on the “I don’t want to walk anywhere” menu

Aim for low-effort, no drama options:
